Dora Bakoyannis

President of the Committee on National Defence and External Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament

Dora Bakoyannis has been a Member of the Hellenic Parliament since 1989. In 2002, Ms Bakoyannis became the first woman in the history of the city of Athens to be elected Mayor with a 60.6% vote, the highest percentage ever achieved by a mayor in the city. In 2006, she took over as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Karamanlis government, a position she held until 2009. Currently, Ms Bakoyannis is the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs. In addition, she serves as the Chairperson of the Greek Delegation to the inter-parliamentary cooperation between Greece, USA, Israel, and Cyprus (3+1). At the European level, Dora Bakoyannis is the Chairperson of the Greek Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and, since 2013, the Vice-President of the European People's Party in the Council of Europe.
