Russia and China want a world that is based on spheres of influence, while democratic countries support the rules-based world order. The two competing visions are bound to collide, and the two sides are doing their best to rally the troops behind their cause. Western countries often use a stick-and-carrot method to promote democratic principles and respect for human rights. Russia and China care more about access to natural resources, with little regard to the well-being of the populations or democratic principles. We know what these two opposing camps want from the rest of the world, but what kind of world order do the emerging powers envision? What are their options? Can the non-aligned nations continue to work with both sides to advance their own interests?
