The Security of Mare Nostrum and Beyond: The Return of Northern Europe to the World Scene?
The overarching theme of the seventh Lennart Meri Conference, entitled “The Security of Mare Nostrum and Beyond: The Return of Northern Europe to the World Scene?”, was the security of Northern Europe and the regions adjacent to it, including the Arctic.
The Conference featured discussions and debates on such issues as the political, military and economic aspects of Northern European security, Russia, Ukraine, the Arctic challenges and opportunities, energy security, transatlantic relations, Eastern partnership, the future of NATO, and cyber security.
Alongside the Conference agenda, our guests had opportunities to tour Tallinn’s Old Town or to choose from other excursions such as a tour of the Seaplane Hangars of the Estonian Maritime Museum, a visit to the ICT Demo Centre, or a visit to the Kumu Art Museum.
The Conference began in the evening of April 25 and concluded at lunchtime on April 27. Attendance was by invitation only, but the plenary sessions of the Conference were available through real time webcast.
The Conference was arranged jointly by the International Centre for Defence and Security (ICDS) and the Lennart Meri Foundation.
