Adam Thomson
Director of the European Leadership Network, UK
Adam Thomson has been the Director of the European Leadership Network since November 2016. The ELN builds better security for wider Europe. Adam was for 38 years a career British diplomat. On European security, he served in Moscow 1981-83, the UK Delegation to NATO 1983 – 86 (during the dual track decision), Washington DC, London (including as Head of the FCO’s Security Policy Department 1998 – 2002) and as UK Permanent Representative to NATO 2014 – 16. On South Asia and Afghanistan, jobs included New Delhi (during the India-Pakistan nuclear tests), London and British High Commissioner to Pakistan 2010 – 13. Other roles included being the Soviet analyst in the Cabinet Offi ce Assessments Staff 1989 – 91 and the UK Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York 2002 – 06.
