In March 2015, the ITER Council appointed Dr Bigot as Director-General (DG) of the ITER Organization, and in 2020 he was appointed for a second term. He has been associated with ITER since France’s bid to host the project in 2003; and since 2008, he has served as the High Representative of the French Government for the implementation of ITER in France. Before his formal appointment as ITER DG, he served two terms from 2009 to 2015 as Chairman and CEO of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), and earlier served as France's High Commissioner for atomic energy. He is also a high-ranking university professor, holding France’s highest-level teaching diploma in physical science and a PhD in chemistry, having authored more than 70 publications in theoretical chemistry. Among other awards, Bigot is a Commander in the French Order of the Legion of Honour.
