Elisabeth Millard

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs

Elisabeth I. Millard took up her position as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs on September 5, 2017. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, she served as Ambassador to Tajikistan from January 2016 until September 2017. She previously served as Acting Executive Secretary of the Department of State and as Deputy Executive Secretary of the Department of State. Ms. Millard’s overseas assignments include Kazakhstan, Morocco, Nepal, India, Denmark, and the Czech Republic. In Washington, she served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for South and Central Asian Affairs at the National Security Council, as well as in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and in the Operations Center. Before joining the Foreign Service, Ms. Millard worked in the private sector in the United States and the Middle East. Ms. Millard earned a B.Sc. (Econ) from the London School of Economics, an M.A. from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and studied at the University of Geneva. Ms. Millard speaks French, Swedish, and Danish, as well as conversational German and Russian.
