His Excellency EspenBarth Eide has served as the Foreign Minister of Norway since October 2023 and has been elected to the Norwegian Parliament as a representative from Oslo. Previously, Mr Barth Eide has served in numerous prominent positions in the Norwegian Government, including as the Minister of Climate and Environment of Norway (2021-23), the Foreign Minister (2012-13), Minister of Defence (2011-12), the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs (2010-11, 2000-01), and State Secretary for Defence (2005-10). While outside the government, Mr Barth Eide was the Managing Director and Member of the Managing Board of the World Economic Forum in Geneva from 2014-16, and the UN Under-Secretary General and the Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus (2014-17), chairing the negotiations aiming at reunification of the divided island. Mr Barth Eide has pursued an academic career in political science and has been involved in several United Nations reform and lessons-learned activities, as well as in peace negotiations worldwide.
