Chief of the German Navy

Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack has been Chief of the German Navy (German Navy Headquarters, Rostock) since March 2023. Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack joined the German Navy in 1982 and, after successfully completing his academic studies of Business and Administration at the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg, he underwent training as above-water warfare officer and commanded the fast patrol boats “S49 Wolf” and “S50 Panther.” He was later deployed in various command functions on ships including as a commanding officer of frigate “Bayern.” After attending the National Admiral Staff Officer Course at the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College in Hamburg, he held various leadership positions in the national and international arena. Among other things, he was Commander of German Navy Flotilla 1 in Kiel and simultaneously Director of the NATO Centre of Excellence for Operations in Confined and Shallow Waters, Deputy Chief of Staff Operations at the German Joint Support Service Headquarters in Bonn and Commander of the NATO Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger (Norway). From 2021 to 2022, Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack was Commander of the German Fleet and Vice Chief of the German Navy (German Navy Headquarters, Rostock).
