Maia Sandu

President of Moldova

President Maia Sandu has served as President of Moldova since December 24, 2020, and was re-elected in 2024, becoming the first president in the country’s history to win a second term by direct popular vote. She previously served as Minister of Education (2012–2015), founded the Party of Action and Solidarity in 2015, and became Prime Minister in 2019. A strong advocate of European integration, she co-signed Moldova’s EU membership application in 2022; the country gained candidate status that June and opened accession talks the following year. Before politics, she worked with the World Bank and held roles in Moldova’s Ministry of Economy. She studied at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, the Academy of Public Administration in Chișinău, and Harvard’s Kennedy School.
