Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the United States to NATO
Ambassador Matthew G Whitaker has served as the Permanent Representative of the United States to NATO since 3 April 2025. Prior to his appointment, Ambassador Whitaker built a distinguished career in both private practice and public service. In the public service, Ambassador Whitaker served as the Acting US Attorney General (2018-19), the Chief of Staff of Attorney General Jeff Sessions (2017-18), and the US Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa (2004-09). Outside the government, Ambassador Whitaker has held senior positions at the America First Policy Institute, the American Cornerstone Institute, the American Conservative Foundation, Graves Garrett Greim Law Firm, and was the Managing Partner of Whitaker Hagenow & Gustoff, LPP, along with many other high-level roles at law firms, institutes, and companies. Ambassador Whitaker holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa.
