Xavier Chatel

Advisor for Strategic Affairs to the French Presidency

Xavier Chatel is an advisor for strategic affairs in President Macron’s diplomatic team, having been appointed in 2022. He was admitted into the Foreign Service in 2004. Mr Chatel was first responsible for NATO and European defence at the Foreign Ministry’s Strategic Directorate (2004-07). Mr Chatel was then posted to the French Permanent Representation to the United Nations in New York, as a negotiator on Iran, DPRK, nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament, and the war in Georgia (2007-10). Subsequently he served at the French Embassy in London, as political adviser (2010-12), then as embassy spokesperson (2012-14). He was then appointed as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs at the Foreign Ministry (2014-17). From 2017 to 2020, Mr Chatel served as diplomatic adviser to Florence Parly, the Minister for the Armed Forces. Between 2020 and 2022, he served as Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. In June 2022, Mr Chatel was awarded the distinction of Knight in the Order of Merit.
