Zhanna Nemtsova

Founder, Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom, Germany

Zhanna Nemtsova is the eldest daughter of Boris Nemtsov, Russian statesman and opposition leader, who was assassinated on February 27, 2015 in front of the Kremlin wall. An economist by training, she began her career in an asset management company. In 2011 she joined RBC Television, a privately-owned Russian TV channel focused on fi nancial markets and the world economy. At RBC she was a markets commentator, then the host of her own show. In May 2015 she left Russia for Germany, and in August 2015 joined Deutsche Welle, where she hosts her own show, Nemtsova Interview. In 2015 she founded the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom, which seeks to preserve Nemtsov’s legacy and support those who are defending the ideas of democracy and freedom in Russia. Among the Foundation’s projects are the Boris Nemtsov Prize for Courage, the annual Boris Nemtsov Forum, fellowships for political refugees, aid for political prisoners, and the Boris Nemtsov Summer School of Journalism. For her work, Nemtsova has been awarded Poland’s Solidarity Prize, the U.S. State Department’s International Women of Courage Award, and the PEC Prize for Protection of Journalists.
