Matthew Kroenig

Vice President and Senior Director of the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and Director of Studies at the Atlantic Council

Dr Matthew Kroenig is the Vice President and Senior Director of the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and the Council’s Director of Studies, where he manages a bipartisan team of fellows. His research focuses on US national security strategy, strategic competition with China and Russia, and strategic deterrence and weapons non-proliferation. He is a Commissioner of the Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States. He previously served in the Department of Defense and the intelligence community during the Bush, Obama, and Trump administrations and received the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s Award for Outstanding Achievement. He is a tenured professor of government and foreign service at Georgetown University, the author or editor of eight books, and co-author of a bimonthly column at Foreign Policy. His articles and commentary regularly appear in major media outlets.
