Boris Ruge

Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy of NATO

Ambassador Boris Ruge became NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy in September 2023. From September until December 2024, he served as Acting Deputy Secretary General of NATO. He previously served as Vice Chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Director for the Middle East/North Africa at the Foreign Office in Berlin, German Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and Deputy Ambassador to the US. Having joined the Foreign Service in 1989, much of Amb Ruge’s career has been focused on security policy. He worked at NATO Headquarters in Brussels during the Kosovo air campaign and later served as Chief Political Advisor to two successive Commanders of the Kosovo Force. Amb Ruge also served as Head of the Political Department at the Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
