Night Owl Session under Chatham House Rule

Those Who Give Up Freedom for Peace Deserve Neither

May 16, 22:00-23:30

According to Cicero, wars are to be waged in order to render it possible to live in peace without injury. Neither Russia nor Ukraine have shown interest in peace talks. Ukraine does not have a choice – it is fighting to defend its independence and its people. Nevertheless, there are those who call for peace, seemingly for the sake of peace. Ukraine is sceptical of those calls, arguing that this would be a pause, not peace. The big question is who has the right to call for peace? If one party is bent on destroying the other how can peace be achieved?
